The Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL), a Public Sector Enterprise under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), celebrated its Diamond Jubilee Year on 4 October 2026, marking six decades of its journey in uranium mining and processing and its contribution at the forefront of India’s nuclear power programme.

The Diamond Jubilee Year celebrations at Jaduguda brought together senior officials, scientists, engineers, technical personnel, employees, media professionals and other stakeholders to commemorate an important milestone in UCIL’s institutional journey and to look ahead to the opportunities and shared responsibilities of the future.

The Diamond Jubilee Year celebrations were graced by Ms. Seema Jain, Member-Finance, Atomic Energy Commission, as the Chief Guest. During the programme, she also visited the Technology Demonstration Pilot Plant (TDPP) at C, R&D, Jaduguda, and the proposed new site of the Dark Matter Laboratory at the 815-metre level of the Jaduguda underground mine.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Seema Jain, Member-Finance, Atomic Energy Commission, said, “The Diamond Jubilee Year of UCIL is a celebration of six decades of scientific capability, institutional experience and dedicated service to the nation. It is also an occasion to pay respectful homage to Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha and the pioneers who laid the foundations of India’s uranium mining and processing capabilities. From the depths of the earth to the larger nuclear energy programme, UCIL has played an important and responsible role in building indigenous capability in uranium mining and processing. Over these six decades, generations of UCIL personnel have demonstrated remarkable dedication and grit, working in challenging conditions and environments to sustain this important national endeavour. As India looks towards an expanded role for nuclear energy, this milestone is also an opportunity to recognise the people, technologies and systems that have sustained this journey and to look ahead with confidence.”

Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, conveyed his greetings on the occasion and said, “The Diamond Jubilee Year is an occasion to recognise the contributions of UCIL and to reaffirm the importance of continued innovation and capability building as India advances on the Nuclear Energy Mission.”

A significant feature of the Diamond Jubilee Year programme was the Journalists’ Workshop, organised at the Information Centre, Narwapahar, along with a DAE Technology Exhibition showcasing technologies and applications emerging from the DAE’s Units and Institutions.

The workshop brought participating media delegates closer to the science, technology and people behind India’s nuclear power programme. It provided the media delegates with an opportunity to interact with scientists, engineers and technical experts and gain a deeper understanding of the technologies, systems and applications that constitute the wider nuclear and radiation technology ecosystem.

The media delegates visited UCIL’s uranium mining and milling facilities, gaining first-hand exposure to mining operations, ore handling and processing systems, as well as the technologies and practices adopted at the operational sites.

Dr. Kacham Anand Rao, Chairman & Managing Director, UCIL, said: “The Diamond Jubilee Year is a proud milestone for every member of the UCIL family. Over six decades, UCIL has steadily built expertise and infrastructure in uranium mining and processing, while strengthening its capabilities in technology, safety and environmental management. We were particularly pleased to open our operations and facilities to the media on this occasion. The Journalists’ Workshop and DAE Technology Expo provided an opportunity for first-hand engagement with the science, technology and people behind our operations and with the wider contributions of DAE.”

Established in 1967, UCIL has been an integral part of the development of India’s indigenous uranium mining and processing capabilities, providing the essential resource base for India’s nuclear power programme. The Diamond Jubilee Year celebrations marked the evolution of a specialised national capability, from underground and opencast mining to ore processing, technology development, occupational safety, radiation protection and environmental management.

Six decades of experience. A continuing commitment to capability. And a renewed journey towards the future of India’s nuclear energy programme. Uranium Leads the Way.
