The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is convening a three Days Workshop on Base Revision of State-level Index of Industrial Production (IIP), at Thiruvananthapuram, Keralam in collaboration with Department of Economics and Statistics (DES), Keralam during 28–30 October 2026.
The IIP is a key indicator of industrial performance, tracking changes in performance of industrial sector in economy. It is widely used by policymakers, economists, businesses and investors to assess trends in industrial activity and support informed decision-making. The index also serves as an important input in estimating overall economic growth.
MoSPI has updated the base year of the All-India IIP from 2011-12 to 2022-23. The base year is the reference year against which changes in production in later years are measured. A more recent base year helps the index reflect what India’s industries actually produce at present. The revised series incorporates several methodological improvements, including revision of the item basket and weights, updating of the factory panel, expansion of coverage to include activities such as Gas Supply, Water Supply, Sewerage and Waste Management and provision for factory substitution.
The State DES are responsible for compiling and disseminating the State-level IIP. As the nodal Ministry at the national level, the MoSPI provides technical guidance to States and Union Territories (UTs) to promote methodological uniformity and improve the quality and comparability of industrial statistics.
The three-day workshop will familiarise participating States and UTs with the proposed changes in the structure and methods of the revised IIP and help them finalise the list of items to be tracked and the factories that will report data. It will also provide a platform for discussions and feedback on the revisions to National Industrial Classification-2025 and National Product Classification.
Around 60 officials from MoSPI and the DESs of various States and UTs are expected to take part. Through this workshop, MoSPI aims to strengthen the quality, consistency and comparability of industrial statistics across the country.
